Mr. T. W. Hannam
The death has occurred of Mr Thomas William Hannam, of Auckland, and late of Whangarei, at the age of 82. Born at Rochdale, Lancashire, England. in 1864, Mr Hannam arrived in New Zealand on Christmas Day of 1881. He made the journey, which took four months, in the sailing ship May Queen. He commenced his trade as a bricklayer in Auckland, where he served his time, in 1886 moving north to Whangarei. where he remained in the building trade. He married Miss E. J. Buck, of Auckland. About 1904 he opened a brick yard, and this he continued operating until 1917, when he gave up business and went farming at Maungakaramea. In 1934 he retired to Birkenhead, where he lived until his death. Well-known and popular throughout the Whangarei district, Mr Hannam, in earlier days, was keenly interested in shows, and was an active and energetic member of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. It was chiefly through his efforts that annual shows were commenced by the Whangarei Poultry, Pigeon and Cagebird Society. He was also a member of the Mounted Rifles. At Maungakaramea, he was wellknown as a keen Jersey breeder and sportsman. Several of the buildings he constructed still stand in the business and residential area of Whangarei. Cf his original family, one son was killed in the Great War. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Messrs. H. Hannam (Whangarei), J. Hannam (Whangarei), T. Hannam (Maungakaramea) G. Hannam (Kaikohe), and three daughters, Mesdames N. Hy<?e (Birkenhead), B. Lees (Kamo), and J. Woolhouse (Tauraroa).
