Tennis.—The 1945-45 New Zealand lawn tennis championships will be held at Auckland on January 5 and 7 to January 12 inclusive. Tins decision as to location and dates tor the reintroduction of the championships was made at last night s metting of the management committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association.

Manpower.—All category A men held on appeal will be placed under manpower direction and will be required to remain in, or returned to, the employment for which they had been withheld from military service, said Mr. C. A. Beaufort, district manpower officer, in Hamilton yesterday. In releases from the forces priority would be given to essential occupations. Most of the men of the 16th reinforcements would not be recalled to camp, but wouid be liable to direction to essential work.

Clothing.—Nearly 15 tons of clothing and boots have been despatched from Hamilton in response to me recent appeal for clothing for Unrra. The consignment consisted of 38,551 articles of clothing and 1730 pairs of footwear. Hamilton’s quota was eight tons. The organiser, Mr. T. Parker, thanked all those who had assisted him in making the appeal a success. Died. A farmer, Mr. Harold Thomas Porritt, aged 38. married, of Te Rore, was found in a semi-conscious condition on his farm yesterday morning. He was removed to the Waikato .Hospital, but died before admission.

Bequest-—After the termination of a life interest, the whole of the estate of the late Mr. Joseph William Shannon, retired civil servant, is to be devoted to Dr. Barnardo’s Homes for the general purposes of the homes. Mr. Shannon died on July 2, leaving an estate which 'has been valued for probate at under £20,000. Ruapehu.—Mount Ruapehu has been increasing its activity in tne past few days. Eruptions with smoke rising to a heignt of 12,000 feet are becoming quite cqmmon. There was an even larger one at one o’clock yesterday afternoon. The smoke can be seen well over the low-lying bank of clouds which has covered the mountain at times.
