Congratulates Borough On Orderly Celebration
Congratulations to Whangarei residents -;n the orderly manner in which celebrations of the cessation of hostilities had been conducted in the Whangarei Borough, were extended by the chairman! (Mr E. Lr. Whimp) at the Whangarei Harbour Board's meeting yesterday. "They proved that celebrations can be carried out without- broken bottles and smashed windows,” commented Mr Whimp. The celebration had been conducted enthusiastically and in a manner which was creditable to the. people of Whangarei. He had witnessed no unpleasant scenes, and jubilation was expressed by the people in an orderly fashion. No exception could be taken to the people’s attitude on that clay. "But behind all these celebrations, wo must net forget those people who were unable to participate in the festivities because of the loss of dear ones on active service,” said Mr Whimp. It would be fit to record some appreciation of what was owed to the fighting forces and those who had sacrificed their lives to make the world a better place. Harbour Board Tribute. Mr Whimp then moved: "That we, members cf the Whargarei Harbour Board, place on record cur deep and full acknowledgment cf the enormous and unredeemable debt that we ewe tc all branches of the armed services—the Army, Navy, Air Force and Mercantile Marine —and all other organisations, associations and individuals, who have contributed in any way io the great and overwhelming victory achieved ever those tyrannical and fanatical forces of evil which sought to destroy cur structure of civilisation and (enslave the peace-loving and free peoples cf the world. Further, we extend to all sorrowing relatives cur deepest and heartfelt sympathy in their great and inepytable loss of heroic sons, husbands, brothers, sisters and ethers near and dear to them, who sacrificed tlieir lives on the altar cf freedom." With members standing in silence, the motion was carried unanimously. Rectification of damage incurred to property of the board during victory celebrations was ordered. Mr R. H. Allan said that several stones from the rock wall along the board’s property in Onerahi Road had been pushed over on 10 gardens. "The hoodlums that did it should be ashamed,” said Mr Allan.
