Unifying: Rail Gauges
CANBERRA, This Day. The Commonwealth will prepare immediately for unification of railway gauges in Australia, said the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley), in an address to the Premiers' Conference, which agreed, in principle, to standardisation.
A staff of experts will be appointed to confer with the State Railway Commissioners on preparatory work. The Premiers objected to Commonwealth proposals to pay one-fifth of the cost while the States shared the balance on a population basis, so the Commonwealth agreed to consider making a larger contribution to the cost.
