Envoys Arrive For Surrender In China
(Rec. 11.10 a.m.) CHUNGKING. Aug. 21 Japanese envoys, headed by General Kyoshi, have arrived at Chihkiang to arrange the Japanese surrender in China, says a correspondent of the Associated Press. Kyoshi is Okimura’s deputy chief of staff. Japanese envoys in China, headed by General Okimura, have arrived in Western Honan to arrange details ot the surrender of the Japanese forces. The situation in China appears to have all the elements of a Chinese jigsaw puzzle, says a British correspondent there. The antagonism between Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's forces and the Communists is the root of the trouble. The Communists have over 1.000.000 regular troops and almost 2,000,000 guerillas, and claim responsibility for 80.000,000 Chinese people. The Chungking Government has an army of at least 4,000,000. The Communists have tied up hundreds of thousands of Japanese garrison troops in North China, and one Communist army, of 30,000. was yesterday reported to be marching on the former capital, Nanking. The Communists also control the ancient capital of Peking. The Associated Press correspondent at Chungking says it is again credibly reported that regular Chinese forces clashed with Communists near Taiyuan, the Japanese-occupied capital of Shansi Province. Communists are reported to have seized an airfield near Taiyuan, from which they were ejected by Chungking troops.
