GARRISONING PHOSPHATE ISLES
LONDON, August 21. Australian forces would garrison Nauru and Ocean Islands, which are included in the area of Australian responsibility, said the Minister for Army (Mr Forde). The Government was anxious to see both islands reconditioned as soon as possible, because the phosphate deposits there—the richest in the world—-were urgently required to step up Australia’s food production. Mr Forde added that Britain, Australia and New Zealand had spent more than £3,000,000 in the development of the islands. It would probably take many months to completely restore the equipment.
