Northland Loses First Roller Mills Match
(Special) AUCKLAND; This Day The 18th annual competition for the Northern Roller Mills Shield was commenced at Eden Park yesterday afternoon under the control of the Auckland Primary Schools’ Rugby Union. This ...competition has been suspended since 1941 owing to war conditions and travel restrictions.
The Northland, Waikato, Thames Valley, South Auckland and Waipa districts are represented, apart from three teams from Auckland schools. The teams and officials were extended a welcome at the Town Hall yesterday morning by the Mayor (Mr. J. A. C. Alium). who pointed out that there was -no more important branch of education than team-work such as was promoted by the game of Rugby. Such team-work was later reflected in the life of the community. It had been amply demonstrated among the New Zealand servicemen overseas.
In addition to learn managers and officials present at the Town Hall were BroMarcellin, president of the Auckland Primary Schools’ Rugby Union. Mr. W. G. Miller, secretary, and Mr. H. Frost, honorary life-president of the Auckland Rugby Union. Results of yesterday’s matches were;—
A Section.—First Round: Thames Valley (i (try by Hillman and genalty goal by Stables), Northland 0; City Central, 3 (try by Ross), Waipa 0. B Section.—First Round: City East, 11 (tries by Co.cker, Richards and Graydon, one converted by Chellew), Waikato, 3 (try by Griffin): City North, 17 (tries by'Farrington, Silva, Keith, Beattie and Mazzoleni, one converted by Silva), South Auckland, 0.
The draw for today’s play is:—A section: Waipa v. Thames Valley, 2 p.m.; Northland v. City Central, 3 p.m. B Section: South Auckland v. City East, 2 p.m.; City North v. Waikato, 3 p.m.
