Maungakaramea

The annual convention of the Northland, W.C.T.U. was opened at the S.S. hall on Wednesday morning. The presi-d-nt, Mrs. Roberts, of Dargavlle, was in (he chair, and was accompanied by Miss Edmed, secretary, of Dargaville. A large number of reports were given by the different branches, from Whangarei, Dargavillo, Maungaturoto, Maungakaramea, and Pukepoto. There was a good attendance of visitors. The V members of the W.C.T.U. served a hot lunch. In the afternoon Mrs. Roberts was in the chair. The election of officers resulted:—President. Mrs. Roberts (reelected) 1 ; secretaries. Mids Edmed and Mrs. Moorhead (Dargaville); treasurer, Mrs. Weir, Tauraroa; white ribbon, Mrs. Gillingham; cradle roll, Mrs. Cullen (Maungaturoto); Maori, Mrs. Goodall (Whangarei); peace. Mrs. Weir. Mrs. Harvey delighted her listeners with the rendering of “The Way Of Peace.” Miss Appleby, Auckland, organiser of the W.C.T.U. gave a very bright address. Afternoon tea was served. In the evening an enjoyable concert was held. Addresses, items and games were enjoyed. Supper was served. Thanksgiving Service The hall was crowded to give thanks lor the victory. Mr. L. W. Smith, convener of the Patriotic Committee, was in the chair and was accompanied by the Rev. More, of Mangapai, who gave an excellent address. It was (he Maungakaramea Gardening Circle, not the MetlK>dist Church, who held a “hospital day” on August 8.
