The death occurred today of Sir Macpherson Robertson, in his 85tb year. He began his business career without capital and amassed a great fortune.
A remarkable story of enterprise and endeavour lies behind the life of Sir Macpherson Robertson, originator of the Melbourne Centenary air race and donor of prize-money totalling £20.000 for the eon_ test. Commencing in 1880 with a few manshift articles as his stock-in-trade, Sir Macpherson built up what is the largest confectionery business in the Southern Hemisphere. It. is recorded that. 17 years ago an offer of £2.500.000 for the business was refused. _ A son of David Robertson, oi: Lean. Scotland, Sir Macpherson was born at Ballarat. Victoria. As a boy he sold newspapers m the streets before starting in business as a manufacturer of confectionery. His lirst products were made by himself. in a room of his home and then hawked from shop to shop. He was knighted in 1935.
