Hooting, Jeering At Mention Of Holland

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. A demonstration against the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) was made by a considerable section of the audience at the civic reception to the Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser) last night. The demonstration met with an immediate rebuke from the Mayor (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) who asked that it should not be repeated. The incident occurred when the Mayor was referring to apologies for absence which had been received for the gathering. He said that among them was one from the Leader of the Opposition.

Hooting and jeering immediately broke out from various parts of the hall, particularly from a portion of the gallery near the stage. There were also cries from a number of men who were among the officially invited guests. “That exhibition will grieve the Prime Minister greatly,” said the Mayor, when the noise had subsided. “Now you have heard what I said. Please do not repeat it.” There was a further outcry, several people calling out, “We cannot help it.” When there was silence again the Mayor began his speech of welcome. . Subsequently. Mr. Fraser referred to messages of welcome he had received that day from many people. Among them was one from Mr. Holland, whose action he described as being “very courtous.”
