Mrs. Sarah Hughes

OBITUARY

After a short illness, Mrs. Sarah Hughes, wife of Mr. Stephen Hughes, of Pompallier Street, Whangarei, died in Whangarei Hospital on Monday, at the age of 63. Born in Benhar, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Mrs. Sarah Hughes was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs M. McHugh, and was educated at a high school in Hamilton, Scotland. In J9GS, she married Mr. Stephen Hughes, a coal miner of Schotts, and after residing in various parts of Scotland for 21 years, Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, with four children, came to New Zealand, where Mr. Hughes worked first as a contractor in Dunedin.

Three years later, the family moved north and settled in Russell Road, Whangarei, Mr. Hughes obtaining positions at the Kamo and Hikurangi coal mines. At the time of Mrs. Hughes’ death, they were residing in Pompallier Street. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Catholic Women's League. ’ All four sons and her daughter have served in the armed forces, while at the age of 59, her husband volunteered for overseas service, but on entering camp in 1940, was retained as a niember of a home defence unit. He was discharged from the forces last year, when he retired. In addition to her husband. Mrs. Hughes is survived by Sgt.-Major S. Hughes (Raventhorpe), ancl M. P. Hughes (overseas with the 2nd N.Z.E.F.), and Messrs. M. Hughes (Whangarei), and H. Hughes (Whangarei). There is one daughter, Mrs. ,S. Belcher, aiso of Whangarei, and five grandchildren.
