H.M.A.S. Australia To Britain For Repairs

(1.40 .m.) CANBERRA, This Day. H.M.A.S. Australia has been sent to Great Britain to be repaired after her recent damage in action the Minister for the Navy (Mr. Makin) announced. She would be refitted with the most modern equipment. The Australia has been sent to Britain under an arrangement that, major refitting should be done at other than Australian ports. This arrangement lias left Australian repairing facilities available to the British Pacific Fleet. The Australia was built 20 years ago on the Clyde and has taken part in all South-West Pacific actions from the battle of the Coral Sea to the assault on Lingaven in the Philippines. Earlier, she had served in the Atlantic. When damaged in Lingayen Gulf, she had been attacked liy Japanese bombers for five days and hit five times. Her casualties in the action were 27 killed, 17 missing and 69 wounded. Cn her way to Great Britain. the Australia will show the Australian flag at New York.
