Record Number Of Labour Candidates

(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON. June 14. Labour is putting up a record number of 6CO candidates for the general election, of whom 597 have already been endorsed. The party secretary (Mr. Morgan Philips), at a Press conference, emphasised that Labour was not fighting as a classparty. which was reflected in the list i i candidates, 129 of whom were university graduates, including 43 solicitors, barristers and doctors. 31 professors and headmasters and also 105 who had occupied managerial and higher business positions One hundred and thirty candidates are servicemen, ranging from lieutenant-gen-eral and air marshal to privates and leading aircraftmen. Labour is putting up 40 women candidates, which is expected to be a greater number than the combined total of all other women candidates. The average age of the candidates is lower than at any previous election, the youngest candidate being a 21 year-oiu serviceman.
