Regards Churchill As World’s Greatest Man

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “I have no apology for regarding Mr Churchill as a hero,” said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) at a largely-attended civic reception tendered him in the Wellington Town Hall last night after his return from his 12 weeks’ tour abroad. Mr Holland added that he believed Mr Churchill Avas the greatest man in the world today and his grasp of world affairs was truly amazing.. He had conveyed Mr Churchill a message many New Zealanders had wanted conveyed, that the Prime Minister should visit this country. Mr Holland urged that tolerance should be shown towards any criticism by a section of the American Press. Under democracy anyone had the right of free speech and some people in America were trying to make out that Britain was a second-rate force. She was not. She had amazing resources. The British people were exhausted, but they had amazing powers of recovery. Speaking of New Zealand Mr Holland said he believed the future of the Dominion was bright, but it was what we made it ourselves. We must remember that we could only have a social system providing it was standing on a firm economic system. No Government could give the people anything that it had not first taken from the people.

“Let us beware of inflation as Ave would a plague,” he said. “If avc played around with the monetary system and put more money in the pockets of the people than there were goods to buy, Ave would only bring suffering on the people.”
