Citrus Conference At Kerikeri Next Year

(Special) TAURANGA, This Day. The 1946 conference of the New Zealand Citrus Council will be held at Kerikeri it was decided at the annual conference at Tauranga yesterday. Till advisability or otherwise of continuing the marketing of lemons through the Internal Marketing Division and what action should be adopted in the event of a change of Government policy, were questions discussed at length at the conference. The subject was introduced in a remit from the Auckland Citrus Growers’ Association. It was eventually agreed that, for the protection of the lemon industry, controlled importation and marketing were essential, and the conference approved of the present principle of marketing. The conference also agreed that, as 8/2 a case was recognised as the cost of production at the date of stabilisation, every endeavour should be made to have this recognised as the basic price. Lemon Marketing Account

An Auckland remit adopted was that the, conference approved of adequate reserves being built up in the lemon marketing account, with th'e object of meeting any contingency which might arise, the reserves to be conserved and not used to meet increased labour costs. The conference also decided to urge upon the Minister of Marketing the desirability of setting up the proposed Citrus Marketing Committee as early as possible. In an effort to meet the demand for citrus trees, the conference decided that the Fruitgrowers’ Federation be approached to ascertain whether it would consider as an adjunct to the Levin nurserj/ the establishment and maintenance of a suitable area for the propagation of certified citrus trees. A remit that steps should be taken to enforce the existing regulations governing the marketing of marmalade oranges and New Zealand grapefruit was carried. Mr G. T. Burbury, of Tauranga, was re-elected president of the council, and Mr H. H. Booth, of Auckland, vicepresident.
