Decisive Stage In Battle For Iwo Jima
<11.5 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 6. Tokio radio stated that American Marines launched a violent attack on Iwo Jima, where fighting has reached a decisive stage.
“The enemy last night made several unsuccessful attempts to infiltrate our lines on Iwo Jima and subjected the marines to substantial small-arms and artillery fire,” says a Pacific Ocean Area communique. “Both lines remained materially unchanged next day. Improved wind and weather facilitated the unloading of supplies on the eastern and western beaches.” Compressed into an area about half-a-mile wide at its narrowest part, the Japanese on Iwo Jima are fighting as if they did not know they were beaten, says the “New York Times” correspondent on the island. They not only use delaying tactics intended to make the marines pay the maximum price, but also attempt to break the American line, which stretches across the widest part of the island with the three divisions abreast.
