Want Prison Reform

(P.A.) V DUNEDIN, This Day. A decision to request the Government to scl up a commission to inquire info the prison system in New Zealand, “with a view to its improvement by a more Christian approach to the treatment of prisoners, including women and young girls,” was ’reached by the conference of rhe Methodist Church, Mr. A. C. Barrington (Christchurch) said it was the responsibility of Christian people to keep in touch with prisoners. There was nothing Christian about the present system. Mr. C. E. Taylor (Feilding) supported the administration of the prison system as it was at present constituted, and emphasised that the greatest care was taken to prevent any miscarriage of tustice. He agreed, however, that every effort should be made by persons with Christian principles to ’ncke. contact with prisoners.
