(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) NEW YORK;, Mar. 4. Forty-seven transport planes from an altitude of 100 feet parachuted SSOGlbs of mortar shells on tile southern air strip for the use of American troops, says the Iwo Jima correspondent of the United Press. The Japanese opened up with rockets and mortars when the planes appeared, but the cargo was safely dropped Marines quickly taking delivery. ‘‘Under heavy fire from small arms and mortars, the sth Marine Division on the left flank and the 3rd Division in the centre generally advanced on Iwo Jima today 200 yards to 400 yards,’.’ says a Pacific Ocean Area communique.
"The progress of the 4!h Division on the right was rlow, due to extremely heavy enemy resistance. The infantry attacks were supported by artillery, but close carrier aircraft support was limited by the small dimensions of the enemy area. A strong enemy pocket near Minami continued to hold back our lines in that sector. "Ships are unloading both on the eastern and western beaches. Landbased aircraft have begun to use the southern airfield for evacuating wounded. Carrier aircraft kept up rocket attacks on Chichi Jima and liaha Jima."
