Kerikeri Will Have Northland’s Biggest And Best Social Hall
(Special). KERIKERI, This Day. Great expectations are held in Kerikeri for the new public hall now in process of completion. Proudly the people here point to it as the largest in the entire Northland, and there is no doubt that it certainly is a hall such as even the largest towns might envy.
The building is the former passionfruit juice factory in Waitangi Road (recently re-named from the old Wellington Road). The passionfruit company gave place to the Army, but the Army left Kerikeri when the Japs started moving hack towards Tokio. The hall was purchased by the Kerikeri Settlers’ Association for £BOO early last year. It was placed under the control of the Kerikeri Recreation Reserve Committee, which is the controlling body for the nearby sports park. Timber is now .on the job and the task of renovation is well under way. Late in February, the 3200 ft. dance floor was completed, making a particularly attractive dancing surface. A stage 35ft. by 20ft. deep is being built at the northerly end. Back of the dance floor but- actually islanded in the vastness of the building, is a meeting or social room approximately 50ft. square, suitable for almost every conceivable kind of committee gathering, conference or other sit-down affair at which numbers are not great. Immediately above the social room, reached by stairs, is another and smaller room, conveniently placed and spaced for use of spotlights on the stage.
