Appeals connected pimc:pa:;y with meh engaged in secondary industry, were reviewed yesterday ,by No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board, comprising Messrs. R. Coates (chairman), N. Horrobin. F. J. Tercel and It. Gray (secretary). Other Decisions Mr. J. H. Dalbeth appealed for John C. D. Venn, service car driver, employed on the Whangarei-Kaikohe run, Mr. D. L. Ross appearing in support of the appeal. It was stated that the service was daily, carrying passengers, school children, parcels, newspapers and mails, and replacement of a driver was most difficult. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Driver for Marshall and Belton. Ltd. (Mr. Ross), Walter G. Vendt was appealed for by that firm, Mr. W. J. Marshall stating that four drivers were employed on four trucks which were fully employed on work previously detailed to the board. He had seen in the Press the requirements for the forces and efforts would be made to secure a replacement for Vendt. Vendt told the board that he had been released from his employment in Auckland on condition he went farming, but on being interviewed in the manpower office in Whangarei, and informing the officer of this condition he had been told that farming was not considered essential. He had been told to find himself a job and had informed the manpower office that he had obtained his present position. He was still prepared to go farming. The board dismissed the appeal, conditional on Vendt not being called before March 1. Appealing on the grounds of hardship, Lewis A. J. James, painter, said he was a' •widower with one child, attending school, and they were boarding. The child was his concern, but if he were taken for service he would have to leave the child with relatives in Auckland. The appeal was dismissed, conditional on James not being called before February 1. The North Auckland Farmers’ Co-op., Ltd., appealed for Major E. Fell and John W. Flower, motor mechanics, both volunteers for the air force. Mr, T. Mitchell gave evidence that the staff of five mechanics and two apprentices were fully employed, a large portion of the work being the servicing of the Whangarei Transport Ltd.'s fleet of 21 vehicles. Both appeals .were adjourned sine die. Another motor mechanic, John R. Evans, was apoealed for by Paine Bros.. Ltd., Mr. J. R. Morgan stating that two mechanics and a serviceman were employed. Evans had recently met with an accident and another medical boarding might affect, his classification. Endeavours had been made to increase the staff by three mechanics, but none had been available, either for replacement or increase. Sine die adjournment was granted.
