German Command Still Has Substantial Reserves In Hand
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 1
There are more than 70 German divisions facing the Allied Armies on the Western Front today compared with 65 on D Day, says Reuter’s correspondent at 21st Army Group Headquarters. However, the new divisions are of a reconstituted type with about 6000 fewer men than the full strength divisions of 17,000 which faced the Normandy landings.
The German Command still has substantial reserves of men and armour which are not yet committed. The approximate strength of the German armed forces at the end of the year will probably be just short of 6,000,000 men, not including the Volkssturm. The German Command is fighting cleverly for Cologne and the cream of the reserves will probably go into action at the first definite sign of an Allied break-through, or when they can be used in a sharp, effective counter-offensive. The German High Command at present shows no sign of using its strategic reserve.
