Will Bring Jap, War Criminals To Book

CANBERRA, This Day Australia is determined that Japanese war, criminals will shoulder the responsibility for their crimes. Giving this assurance, in the House of Representatives today, the Minister for External Affairs (Dr. Evatt) said: “The Australian Government is determined that nothing that can be done to punish those responsible for brutality and cruelty will be left undone. The suffering and indignities imposed on our soldiers cannot be condoned.’’

- Dr. Evatt was presenting a report by Sir William Webb, Chief Justice for Queensland, who was appointed special commissioner to inquire into Japanese atrocities in New Guinea and elsewhere. The Minister said there was evidence that the Japanese had massacred, .tortured and maltreated Australian military and civilian personnel as well as natives in New Guinea.
