Waterfront Test Case

(P.A.) .WELLINGTON, This Day. The magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout) gave judgment today in the case of James, Henry Biggs, one of 408 water - siders charged with striking on October 11. The magistrate said that extension of the stop-work meeting till 3 p.m. was justified by the importance of the matters to be explained to the men, but the excuse given for not resuming work till next day was not valid.

All elements of a strike existed, but the offence was a very venial one. As this was a test case a nominal fine of £2 was imposed with costs. The other prosecutions were again adjourned, the Crown indicating that these might be withdrawn.
