Reply To R,S.A. Request For Retaining Timber
Due to the acute shortage of timber throughout the North Island, every endeavour was being made, by zoning supplies, to spread the scarcity as equitably as possible over all districts, states the reply of the* Minister for/ Supply, to a telegram recently despatched by the Whangarei Returned Services’ Association, requesting that locally-produced timber should remain for use within the district in which it is milled. The telegram pointed out that the shipment of timber elsewhere had a detrimental effect upon-the construction of State rental-houses in the Whangarei area. ;
“At the commencement of November, the total number of State houses under construction in Northland was seven at Kaikohe and 34 at Whangarei,'’ states the Minister’s reply. “The extent to which they had already been completed was: 82 per cent, complete, 11 houses; 60 per cent., 2; 42 per cent, 2; 20 per cent., 11; 12 pc-r cent., 14. • 7 “The timber controller, in conjunction with the building controller is arranging an investigation intb.
