Barclay Boosts N.Z Farming Conditions

That the position in Australia was still deteriorating through the drought and it was hard to determine as yet what the losses would be, was stated by the High Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia (Mr J. G. Barclay) in a letter to the “Advocate’-’ upon his return to Canberra. New Zealand had looked a regular garden compared with drought-stricken Australia, and there was no mistake about it, the farmers in the Dominion were fortunate alongside the farmers in Australia, with disastrous drought problems looming up at different periods. Mr Barclay stated that an indication of the position of the farming industry in Australia through the drought was given by a Press report of a recent, stock salenear Canberra, which showed that, due to the continued dry conditions the demand for sheep and cattle was not keen and prices realised were lower than previous sales.

In the sheep section fat shorn Merino ewes made 7/-, full-mouth and shorn Merino wethers 4/-, full-mouth woolly Merino wethers 15/-, and one year old Merino wethers, shorn, 8/1. Fat cows sold from £7, £7/10/-, £7/16/-, £B,* £B/10/-, £9/3/- to £9/10/-; fat. heifers £B/1/-, and dairy heifers £4/17/6 to £6/10/-.
