Wants U.S. To Raise Embargo On Defaulters

(Rec. 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 The State Department has disclosed that several foreign Governments have requested post-war loans. The. Assistant Secretary for State (Mr. Dean Acheson) testifying to the House Committee on post-war economic policy, urged Congress to reDeal the Johnson Act which prohibits loans to Britain and other countries which have not paid their Great War debts. Mr. Acheson pointed out that conditions had changed greatly since the Johnson Act was passed and it now constitutes a barrier to American rehabilitation .. and international trade and prevents the granting of urgently needed loans to principal European Governments.
