Proposals By Workers For Co-operative Timber Mills

(Special) ROTORUA, This Day. In a statement, Mr. W. Seator, president of the New Zealand Timber Workers' Union, said that proposals for workerowned co-operative timber mills were discussed by the National Timber Production Advisory Committee in Wellington last week.

The union proposals are: (1) Approval of the principle of worker-owned co-oper-ative mills; (2) the provision of finance by the State to be repaid by co-operative parties by instalments over a reasonable period; (3) that they undertake all logging operations (it is recognised by all parties that this is very necessary on account of fire risk, and also the matter of proper care of regeneration); (4) that the State supply suitable plant for the mills, the plant to be approved by the union; (5) that the State Forest Service set out the terms and conditions on which plant would be supplied to co-operative groups; and (6) that the State Housing Depart-, ment undertake the provision of housing' for co-operative workers.
