Rehabilitation Of Returned Maoris

A pamphlet drawn up by the tribes oi itie Tai Tokerau on the question of rehabilitation was enthusiastically discussed by a large assembly of Maoris at Ngungttru. The pamphlet was presented to the Whangarei centre vestry by Messrs. Mann Wellington and G. Mahnngn. After; reviewing the rehabilitation of Tai Tokerau returned personnel to date. Mr. Wellington gave an outline of a gathering held at To Kao last week, when a •‘parliament” of the Tai Tokerau tribal representatives was held, and presided over by Horn* Wi Kaipo, the aged chief of the Aupouris. The pamphlet, which was written in the Maori language, dealt at length with the Treaty of Waitangi, and its clauses, upon which the tribes re-affirmed their allegiance to the King and their investment to the Crown for undisturbed possession of ail their rights and privileges. “Surplus lands” and the acquiring of farms for the returned Maori servicemen was a topic which aroused keen discussion. Other openings into professions and trades for Maori youth were also dealt with. It was stated that many were engaged in essenrial industries, but the time had arrived for survey of the, making of plans for their rehabilitation. Suggestions were tabulated for presentation to Parliament at Wellington next, week by a deputation of all Northland tribes.
