Whangarei Maori Mission

Congratulations on a year of progress were extended by 7 Mr. G. Mahanga at the annual meeting of the Whangarei Maori Mission District Centra! Vestry, held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A Mackie. Ngunguru. The meeting was preceded by a service conducted by Rev. V/. Maiohia. Discussing pressing problems, tne secretary (Mr. H. P. Pepene), urged greater acceptance of parental control of children. extension of the fine work being done by the Mothers’ Union, and also mentioned the urgent need for more workers in the Maori Mission district. Speaking of finance, Mr. Pepene quoted the raising of £BO in a single night, and caid ever 60 people had promised to donate £1 each, while there were indications that another 100 would do so. Pakehas in the diocese of Auckland had raised £BOO on Maori Mission Sunday. In an address on the Maoris mission in the diocese, Mr. H. T. Cherrington said that over £2OOO would be available, for needed expenditure when normal times returned. Under wartime conditions there was a dearth of Sunday school teachers and youth workers generally, while pakehas were unable to bie the help which otherwise would he willingly forthcoming. Motions of sympathy with Bishop r. A. Bennett in his illness, and of congratulation to the Rev. H. V. Hutton, ot Whangarei, on his ordination, were carried.
