Next Time Means Gaol
(Special) AUCKLAND. This Day. A further warning of his intention to impose imprisonment where there have been previous convictions of illegally taking bt ts, was issued by Mr. J. Morling. S.M., in the Police Court today. w'hen Frederick Walter Breed, 50. admitted using premises on .September 30 as a common gaming house. He was fined £BO.
Detectivo-S<Tg(*ant Trethewoy said that following complaints, the premises were' searched at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Defendant was found seated at a desk on which was a pad containing bets. There were no telephones in the room. Breed had three previous convictions, the last in 1936. Counsel pointed out that the business was not an extensive one. Breed had not been carrying on the business regularly as lie had been absent from the Dominion. Breed had been graded unfit by the Manpower Medical Board on account of physical disability. In imposing the fine, Mr. Molding said that ill-health was no justification for breaking the law.
