Nazis Probe For Weak Spot In Holland
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 2. The whole of the northern tip of the Dutch salient is ablaze with battle, says a correspondent of the British United Press with the British 2nd Army. Fresh enemy armoured units are known to be concentrating around Nijmegen salient. There is every indication that the enemy intends to folI low up his serie’s of thrusts with a. cmajor atack if he is able to find a weak spot. The Germans in Reichwald forest continue to be a nuisance, the Allies shelling them and attacking them from the air. A correspondent of the Associated Press reports that British armoured columns are cleaning up to a depth of five miles on an 18 miles’ front along the north-west flank of the salient amid increasing signs that the Germans may be pulling out of the Dutch coastal loop. Latest count of prisoners taken at Calais is 7130, including 130 officers. Tactical air force Mosquitoes during the night carried out non-stop attacks against German troops and supplies moving from Germany to the Holland batle area, says Reuter’s correspondent with the tactical air force. Attacks were concentrated in an area between Arnhem and the sea and as far east as Osnabruck. Mosquitoes operating in the coastal region strafed all kinds of movement around the Dutch Islands and sank 174 barges and tugs near Walcheren Island. North of the Antwerp-Turnhout Canal, the Allies continue to advance across the Dutch border.
There they are opposed by 20 to 25 German battalions. The enemy is getting stronger in the Arnhem area, both in infantry and tanks, reinforcements having been brought up. On Friday afternoon American airborne troops of the 82nd Airborne Division, made an attack on newly-won enemy positions in the woods in the locality of Kranenburg, south-east; of Nijmegen writes a correspondent with the 2nd Army. Not all Allied stations were regained. The Americans ran into a tough defence network and made small progress. 4 Further north a strong enemy attack in the region of Bemmel supported with self-propelled guns, was held, and the British have fairly firm control between the two rivers. The Poles have captured Morxplas after advancing a mile north of Turnhout Canal, says Reuter’s correspondent with the 2nr Army.
