Bay Settlers Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary

Early settlers of the Bay of Islands celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today, are Mr and Mrs Henry S. Ludbrook, of Paihia. who were married on October 3. 1394. Grandson of the late Archdeacon Henry Williams and son of the late Mr S. B. Ludbrook, who was one of the first European settlers in Ohaenwai, Mr Ludbrook was born at Otahuhu 84 years ago. and was educated at the Parnell Grammar School. For three years after completing his education" he farmed on a Hawke’s Bay station, leaving to take over the Tupe Tupe estate, Ohaeawai, on Ins father? death. A Justice of the Peace and a foirnei member of the Combined Counties Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Mr Ludbrook. for over 20 years, was a member of the Bay of Islands County l Council, and a director of the Bay of i islands Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd. He is the only surviving original committeeman of the Bay of Islands Pastoral and Industrial Association, of which he is a life member, and was secretary of the Waimate North Central Vestry for a number of years. Taking a keen interest in sport, he was also patron of the Bay of Islands Rugby Union and the Ohaeawai Foot-ball-Cricket-Tennis and Athletic Sports Club. Mrs Ludbrook is a daughter of tne late Mr J. L. Kinsella, who was a reporter on the “London Times” and was brought to New Zealand by the late Mr C. W. Wilson to join 'the staff of the daily “Southern Cross.” Later, he joined the staff of the “New Zealand Herald,” afterwards becoming special correspondent and committee reporter to Parliament and Wellington correspondent of the "Herald.” Still an active and conscientious social worker, Mrs Ludbrook is president of the Paihia branch of the Women's Institute, a member of the Red Cross, and was one of the oldest women to complete her V.A.D. course I by doing 40 hours hospital training in i the present war. i There are six surviving sons and 20 ! grandchildren.
