Italian Republicans Don't Like Fighting
(8.0. W., 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Oct. 1. A Rome correspondent reports that ma-chine-gun emplacements and barbed-wire are being installed at Milan for protection of banks and hotels for fear of attack by the Garibaldi brigade as the patriots in the mountains north of the city continued to swell daily. The German-trained Italian Republican Army divisions have made such a poor showing in efforts to combat patriots that their employment lias been suspended. Ql five divisions formed only two —the San Marco and Monte Rosa —have been put into action. They both suffered heavy losses in fighting and through desertion The Monte Rosa division is now considered useless. One division recently lost 509 effectives through desertion in one movement, and to counter this tendency the Germans have taken preventive measures by arresting Italian generals and air force officers and holding; them a?, hostages. The Garibaldi brigade in a heavy baltls south of Asiago, inflicted 4,33 casualties and captured a large amount of war material.
