Doleful Critics Are Pungently Criticised

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day At the end of the second week's Victor loan campaign, some significant headings were appearing in prominent newspapers which have liberally helped the work of the district loan committees. These headings are- a reproach, as they indicate a very slow or grudging response to the patriotic effort by 5000 or 0000 leaders of the community who are giving their time to remind fellow citizens of a patriotic obligation, to say nothing of a sound investment, states the National War Loan Committee. * Here are some recent headings from the Victory loan columns in the Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin Press: “Slow Response To War Loan.” “Poor Showing.” “Daily Response Still Too Slow.” “Better Response Needed.” It is admitted that the organisation oi some 400 War Loan Committees takes a little time to work up full pressure and produce maximum results, bur. every day s delay by intending loan investors means another dav of anxiety for local workers, a fear that their district will fail to reach a quota set according to equitable standards. Where Courage Is Needed “Too little and too late” was the criticism heard during the darkest days on the Allied war effort. We have since heard how slender was our fighung equipment at tie time, but that is not the case now, nor does New Zealand lack financial resources in current income and capital (stored income). The £4O 000,000 of the Victory loan do not constitute a difficult objective, and it may be that investors share the very popuiai weakness of Dutting off action till ibe Inst moment. This gives them no financial advantage because interest on the Victory loan commences on the day the application is lodged.
