New U.S. Aircraft-Carrier
NEW YORK, August 20
A correspondent of the “Now York Times,” describing the maiden voyage of the now 27,000-lon Essex class aircraftcarrier to the Pacific war zone, . points out that this vessel clean, fast, murderously armed, and, due to a honeycomb of compartments, difficult lo sink. The navy says that the carrier’s plane complement is more lhan 80.
The Essex carrier, crossed with the South Dakota class battleship, is the prototype of the coming 42,000-ton “battleship carrier,” and already incorporates some of the stronger flight deck features of the 42,000-tonners. The carrier has aboard nearly 3000 men, including pilots and air crew men. The American carrier production goal is approximately. 100 of all types.
