Hikurangi Resumes Whangarei Rugby Lead
By defeating Hera Hora oy eight points to \hroe at Rugby Park, Hikurangi. on Saturday resumed the lead in the Whangaici Rugby Union’s junior championship, t-ricr xo Saturday, Hora Hora held a lead of one point over Hikurangi, with Central one point behind, third, and now Hikurangi is one point ahead cf Hora Hora and Central, which are equal. Played in mud of the consistency ol porridge, Saturday's games did not produce good football, which under the conditions could not be expected. Tile meeting of the two leading teams, however, provided a surprisingly fast and willing game in which the treacherous footing and slippery bail were more responsible than constructive play for the points scored.
Hora Plora opened the scoring early with a try by Eaddie. Hikurangi taking the lead shortly before the interval, when Doel followed* up to catch the defence fumbling and score near the pests a try which Wood converted. Late in the second half, after a ding-dong battle, Whatarau went, over for an unconverted try. Central held undisputed supremacy in the match against Kiwis, and went into second place, with Hora Hora in the championship ladder by 31 —0. Tries were scored by Batten (2), Thomas (2). McDonald, Donaldson and Dyer, five of die seven being converted by Patterson — a notable achievement with a heavy, greasy ball. At Portland, the home team scored its second win of the season, giving Rovers a surprise by eight points to three. In the cnly game of the third grade, A.T.C. having won by default from School, Hora Hora beat Portland by 14 points to nine. For Hora Hora,-Macnay, Dix, Bullen and Thompson scored tries, one being converted by Cleuard, while for Portland. Uffindell and Gower scored tries and Dobson kicked a penalty goal.
A.T.C. Game At Dargaville Visiting Dargaville on Saturday, No. 20 Squadron (Whangarei A.T.C., drew with No. 27 Scmadrcn (Dargaville)—six all. Tryeetiers for Whangarei were Sirl and T. Cook, and ter Dargaville. Glamuzina and Maich. The game was played on a muddy field and in heavy rain.
