Navy To Operate Machine Shops In San Francisco
NEW YORK, Aug. 20,
President Roosevelt has ordered the* navy to take over and operate 99 machine shops in the San Francisco area, where an overtime dispute has reduced output. The action followed the seizure of five machine-shops in the same area on August 15. The Machinist! union banned work exceeding eigh' hours daily or 48 weekly, defying the War Labour Board.
President Roosevelt is trying to re move serious lags in production o some vital war materials, says th< Washington correspondent of the “Nev York Herald-Tribune.” He orderet the acting chairman of the War Pro duction Board (Mr Wilson) to step u] production of radar, heavy artiiler; and other equipment.. The president’ action taken so soon after his retur. from his Pacific inspection is believe to be the outcome of his own observa tions during the tour as well as sobei ing reports on shortages given him b Pacific commanders, also by Genera Marshall who conferred with him o August 17.
