The Northern Advocate "NORTHLAND FIRST" Registered for transmission through the Post as a Newspaper. SATURDAY, AUGUST 19, 1944. THE WAR PROGRESSES

TO-DAY’S news from the east, the west and the south suggests in the clearest manner that Germany’s defeat at the ■ v hands of the Allies is assured. How long the destruction of the enemy’s power to resist will take is a matter about which it would be unwise to dogmatise, but there can be only one end to the struggle if the Allied peoples stand firmly to the task which lies before them. From the west come reports that the entire German Seventh Army, which is being driven from the Normandy front into France, is in danger of being wiped out before it reaches the Seine or when it is on the river’s banks. There seems to be no other conclusion to a retreat which is not far from a rout. According to a correspondent, the Germans have lost all cohesion, as the British, American, French and Polish troops have cut the whole of their communications, and the air forces are massacring the fleeing enemy. According to another correspondent Allied troops, who have fought almost without a break for five days, are carrying on because they realise that they are “in on the greatest defeat the Germans have suffered in Western Europe.” In southern France the Allied invasion is developing apace. The long beachhead has been increased in depth in a most satisfactory manner, and it would seem that the Germans will not long be able to offer strong resistance. In any case, the Allied blow in the south is reflected in the chaotic, state of the enemy in the northern sector. The rapid approach to Paris is one of the highlights of news which may take a sensational turn at any moment.

From the east comes the news that the Russians are on the frontier of East Prussia, and that the enemy’s position on a long stretch of battleline is deteriorating. The week-end should produce news of a highly important character.
