Mr. Raymond Ferner Transferred To South

After four years on the Northland circuit. Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M.. is being transferred to Christchurch, and as president of the Whangarei Centre of the Red Cross Society, he will be farewelled by members of the society at a social on Tuesday evening. Mr. Ferner was appointed to the Bench in 1936 from Auckland, where he had been in practice as a member of a legal firm for 17 years, serving 'on the West Coast before being transferred to Whangarei to take over the Northland circuit from Mr. G. N MorrisMr. Ferner has a notable record of public service on local and public bodies. Prior to his appointment as a stipendiary, magistrate he was Mayor of Mount Albert, a member of the Auckland Transport Board, the Auckland Suburban Drainage Board and the Auckland Metropolitan Relief Committee, while he. was also a member of the executive of the Municipal Association and a director of the Community Sunshine Association. After his magisterial appointment Mr. Ferner retained his interest in educational questions and'has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Greymouth Technical High School and the Whangarei High School. He has also been actively concerned with the Red Cross Society and, as a returned soldier, has taken a keen interest in the Whangarei Returned Services’ Association.

To replace Mr. Ferner, Mr. W. Carrol Harley has been appointed to the Northland circuit. Born at Nelson. Mr. Harley ' practised there as a barrister and solicitor and served on the Nelson City Council and the Harbour Board, while he was chairman of the Nelson Patriotic Society, president of the Nelson College Old Boys’ Association and member of the Board of Governors of Nelson College. In 1938 Mr. Harley was appointed a stipendiary magistrate and chief judge of Western Samoa, commanding the local defence force in 1939. He served with the Rifle Brigade in the last war. Latterly Mr. Harley has been stationed in Wellington.
