Merchant Seamen Complain
(Special) WELLINGTON. Tuesday.
The i'act tliai some members of (he Mercantile Marine had in recent weeks voiced strong criticism of the treatment They received at Nw Zealand ports in comparison with that received in other parts of the world, was mentioned at a meeting of the Wellington Metropolitan Patriotic Committee. Mr. ,1. W. Andrews said he had met several men in the past Jew weeks and they had all complained. It seemed from what they said, that Nw Zealanders received the wot rtt It raiment in their home ports. The honorary secretary, Mr. V. Ward, said that the complaint was not so much against activities under the control ol the patriotic bodies, but against such things as lack of iravel faeililies
Mr. J. H. Collins: I think it should not be test sight of that these men are being well paid, compared with the forces, ini’ the work they are doing, They are getting civilian rates of pay. Members expressed the view that it was more a matter for the Government tnau for patriotic bodies.
