Repel Nazi Attacks In Jassy Area

(Rec. 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. Scores of American fighter-escorted heavy bombers operating for the first time from Russian bases, at dawn yesterday heavily attacked Galatz, key German base in Rumania behind the Jassy sector. A Moscow communique says: “In an area north of Jassy yesterday, we successfully repelled all attacks by large forces of infantry and tanks. Soviet planes on Monday night raided starting 90 fires. Many violent explosions were observed.”

The first combat mission of the United States bombers based in the Soviet Union coincided with the opening of the invasion operations from England. All the American bombers returned after the successful bombing of Galatz aerodrome. A correspondent quotes the pilots as saying “We were jubilant over the good day’s work.” News of the invasion was received on the bombers’ radio.
