Mr. Joseph Andre

OBITUARY

A well-known figure in the Whongarei district for nearly 50 years, Mr Joseph Augustus Andre, has died at the Whangarei Hospital at the age of 80. Born in Belgium, Mr Andre was educated as a mining engineeivbut, on his arrival in New Zealand, 57 years years ago, he immediately took up land in the Puma district, farming this for a while till he, in company with the late Mr Benoit, started a general store at Purua. Later, Mr Andre commenced business in Cameron Street, Whangprei, as a general store and gum buyer, and it was in connection with the latter activity that he was perhaps best known in Northland. About 26 years ago he retired from business to live at Tikipunga, but later moved to Papakura. He was on a visit to his nephew, Mr E. Carrington, of Purua, after visiting his niece. Mrs Stewart, of Ohaeawai He was taken ill and moved to the Whangarei Hospital. During his residence in this district he was keenly interested, and took ah active part, in the community life and in any movement for the advancement of the district. About 35 years ago, Mr Andre married Margaret, the daughter of the late John McLeod (McAllister), one of the pioneer Nova Scotian settlers. Mrs Andre predeceased her husband 17 years ago. There are two adopted children. Mrs Cahoun, of Auckland, and Mr Joseph Andre, lately returned from service overseas.
