Still No Formal Unity Of Command In Pacific

NEW YORK, April 30.

“The meeting between Admiral Nimitz and General MacArthur has confirmed that an effective degree of co-operation has been attained, but there still is not formal unity of command and no guarantee that there will not be further friction of a sort that has too often confused the Pacific picture,” says the “Herald-Tribune” editorially.

“Whether co-operation on this basis can be maintained depends largely upon the direction and timing of future campaigns. If Admiral Nimitz is moving from the Marshalls to the Carolines and General MacArthur from New Guinea to the Philippines, the two commands might remain distinct.

“However, if the two forces are to be combined for an advance along a single line, integrated planning will not be enough and more fundamental integration under a single head will be necessary.”
