No Work At Kamo Mine On Saturday

As satisfactory transport arrangements had not been made for the miners living at Hikurangi to proceed to work at the Kamo coal mine on Saturday morning, the mine was idle on that day. On other days of the week an early morning bus leaves Hikurangi, but this bus does not run on Saturdays, when the miners have had to make their own transport arrangements.

The position came to a head last week. when, at a stop-work meeting, it was decided not to work on Saturday unless a bus ran. This decision was communicated to the authorities but, so far, no satisfactory arrangements have been made with the bus company. To increase the output of coal the mine has, for some time, been working a six-day week but this is now reduced to five.
