Bay Of Islands Picnic Race Meeting At Kensington Park Today

111-fortune has dogged the Bay of Islands Racing Club since it first decided to conduct a picnic race meeting for patriotic purposes. Three times the meeting has been postponed because of wet weather or unfavourable track condbions at Kawakawa, and it was decided to shift the venue to Whangarei.

Today, at Kensington Park, the meeting took place, although again the club was not favoured by the best of luck. Rain during the week and again this morning, made the track exceptionally heavy and ground conditions everywhere wet under foot, but in the afternoon, the weather cleared. With appeti:es whetted by the successful meeting conducted by the Whangarei Racing Club last Saturday, when more than £llOO was raised for patriotic purposes, Whangarei people, as well as many visitors from other districts, attended, and from noon onwards the crowd increased.

Except for £124 given as prize money in the eight rhces, all proceeds went to patriotic funds, but entrance fees from competitors contributed largely towards meeting prize requirements.

During the afternoon the Whangarei and County Pipe Band played selections and national dancing exhibitions were given.

Refreshment booths and stalls conducted by the Purua patriotic committee also contributed largely towards patriotic funds, men and women of that district having worked hard and given generously to ensure that the crowd’s requirements were fullv met. Results:
