Auchinleck’s Position

(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) (8.0. W.) RUGBY, April 27 General Auchinleck’s precise relationship to Lord Mountbatten's command was defined by the Secretary for India (Mr. L. S. Am'ery) in the House of Commons to-day. Mr. Amery said that' General Auchinleck. as Commander-in-Chief of the forces in India, was responsible for the defence of India and administration, training and discipline of the forces stationed in (he India command, but this command did not include Burma, and since the formation of a South-east Asia command, the Commander-in-Chief, India. had no responsibility for operations on the Burma front. Forces operating there were under the supreme Allied commander in South-east Asia (Lord Mountbatten).
