U.S. Bases Nearer Japan Than Auckland

WASHINGTON, April 27. Commenting on the controversy about naval bases a “Herald-Tribune” editorial says: “One cannot help putting down a lot of this discussion to the silly season engendered by the strain of waiting for General Eisenhower to give us something important to think about. It is foolish to commit oneself today to any hard and fast solution for every case. Unless the peace is botched much worse than now seems possible, bases like Auckland, Noumea and Guadalcanar will not have a significant place in American Pacific strategy. Keypoints after the war would be among the Japanese islands and these our Allies would doubtless gladly see retained under the American flag.”
