Few Farmers Make Labour Needs Known
(Special) AUCKLAND. This Day. “So far there has been only a small response to the Government’s scheme for supplying manpower from the army for farms. A new plan was announced recently when farmers were invited to procure form 209 from any money order of the post office on which they are requested to state their requirements." The chairman of the Auckland Primary Production Council (Mr. R. C. Clark) said today it is as yet early to gauge the full effect of the scheme. To supply additional labour for farms was a step in the right direction but he doubted if farmers had had time either to realise or to seize the opportunity provided to help them in their labour problems. The scheme had made no stir so far as the council was concerned. There had been no increase in the number of inquiries for labour, nor in the number of calls from appeal boards on cases that affect the council. The council covers the Waitemata, Manukau and Franklin counties, and the experience generally was that the increased production the Government had asked for was less a matter of manpower than of fertiliser.
