1000 Day Bombers Back Without Loss

(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON. April 26. The air war from Britain again continued all today. Following Mosquitofe’ attack on Cologne last night, 1000 American bombers and long-range fighters today blasted targets in the important aircraft centre of Brunswick and elsewhere in Western Germany.

It is the first time that Americans have ever carried out a major assault against the Reich without loss. Some members of the crews reported seeing smoke rising 15,000 feet. Thunderbolt fighter-bombers, finding a hole in heavy cloud over France, plunged down and attacked a rail centre west of Paris. No enemy fighters were encountered. Lightnings bombed an enemy airfield in France in the afternoon without opposition. A strong force of Marauders returned from Northern France in the evening, followed by a large number of fighters, while strong formations of places went out. Channel Coast Pounded United States headquarters state that a medium force of heavy bombers attacked targets in the Brunswick area today. Strong forces of Thunderbolts, Lightnings and Mustangs supported the bombers. There was no fighter opposition and all bombers returned to their bases. Targets on the French side of the Channel were pounded again today by another big fleet of Allied bombers. For nearly an hour people heard the unbroken roar of aircraft, including strong formations of United States Marauders. Terrific explosions were heard on the other side of the Channel. During the night enemy aircraft crossed the coast of southern England. Bombs were dropped at several places on coastal districts, causing some damage and a small number of casualties. Four enemy aircraft were destroyed. Mosquitoes bombed Cologne. None of ours is missing.
