40,000 Ex-Servicemen In Sydney Parade
SYDNEY, This Day. Sydney's Anzac .Day procession of 40,1100 ex-servicemen look two hours to pass a given point. A strong New Zealand contingent was given the post of honour in the march, just ahead of Unis t A.I.P. Led by .three stalwart Maoris, the contigont included a surprisingly large number of New Zealanders in the uniform of the A.i.F. Fifty bands provided music for the match, one of the most impressive in the history of the city's commemoral ion of Anzac. Earlier, 20,000 had gathered at. the Cenotaph for the traditional dawn service. In other Australian cities, Anzac Day ceremonies were similarly well at tended. At th(> Canberra War Memorial, the New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr. C A. Berendsen) laid a wreath. Til a. special message, the acting-Piime Minister (Mr. Fordo) said: “On the 20th anniversary of Anzac Day, let us rcdedicate ourselves to the stern tasks that await us in the winning of victory and peace, just as the heroic men of the .Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, in those fateful hours of destiny, offered their country all they had to give —their lives—as a sacrifice to freedom and a noble way of life.”
